The Norwegian embassy in Ethiopia invited private business, civil society and representatives from the Norwegian and Ethiopian government to discuss the possibilities of private sector development in Ethiopia, based on the Norwegian government's White Paper, "Working together".
The seminar focused on business development through different forms of partnerships, where private sector, civil society and government will contribute with their different competences.
Virke represented the trade and service sector, based on their work conducted in developing countries in partnership with Norad since 2003, and due to a newly signed MOU with Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association. The partnership is planning to promote trade and development through conducting management skills training and transfer of competence within i.e. Brand Leadership Strategy and Export Professional Training.
Ethiopia has indeed a visionary vision; Becoming a low, middle-income country within 2025, in a low-carbon green economy. The country is focusing on light manufacturing with high work intensity, in order to produce large quantity of goods for export, create jobs and a sustainable economic growth.
From the Ethiopian side, the government is focusing on development of industrial parks with factories producing textile, leather products, shoes etc. products that very well created great potential for Norwegian importers and Virke members in addition to coffee and flowers!
"The value chain has many links, and there is a need for competence and assistance from raw material, production of ready products and internationalization, civil society, business, private institutions and government all have important roles" says Cathrine G Jahnsen, Executive Progamme Manager, Virke summing-up the seminar.
